Buckley Shops

During the summer of 1969 I was home from art college in Manchester and noticed a change in my home town of Buckley, North Wales. The original Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts were disappearing or being modernised. For many generations shops were the heart of the community. Fresh produce was bought daily and customers talked to each another as they waited to be served.

I decided to record them before they vanished for ever. Only eight shops were captured in the time that was available to me using a mixture of inks and gouache on cartridge paper. They have remained out of sight in a closed sketchbook in a drawer, until now.

These paintings have now been published by Blurb and are available in a hardback book along with comments and anecdotes added to the illustrations by some of the people who used to visit these shops.

A snapshot of how ordinary people shopped locally for ordinary things.

These images are also available in a variety of forms such as prints, post cards, teeshirts, phone covers etc., click on the link below to see the full range.

A Dictionary of Artists in Wales

I'm in here somewhere!

Post-War to Post-Modern: A Dictionary of Artists in Wales is a major academic reference work covering a rich period in the arts in Wales.  It is the first illustrated survey, in Welsh and English editions, of the careers of artists and applied artists in Wales over the last sixty years.
With a scholarly introductory essay describing movements and institutions in Wales since 1945, as well as brief but authoritative biographies of artists working in traditional and new media, Post-War to Post-Modern: A Dictionary of Artists in Wales, portrays the country's creativity in fine and applied art, along with its international presence.

Raining in Gwynedd  Watercolour/Ink

Two paintings entered and accepted this year at the North Wales Open at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold, North Wales.

It's been a busy year so far, lots of walking, visiting familiar and unfamiliar areas, with a great deal of sketching and colour notes prepared. There will be many paintings completed over the next couple of months in time for this year's Helfa Gelf.

Cedryn panorama Pastel on board
My first painting of Cedryn was over 20 years ago. Remote and isolated at the end of a valley with dark mountains as neighbours. Cedryn was abandoned many years ago. This painting is also available as a limited edition print.

Raining in Gwynedd Watercolour/Ink
The forecast was for the rain in the morning to clear followed by sunny intervals. The sun did not materialise! Gwynedd is full of these lovely rusting gates with fabulous slabs of slate, cold to the touch but rich in colour when wet.

Fine Art America

Over the past few months I have been working on recreating and simplifying some of my original pastel paintings as vector drawings. These images have now been pared down into a more graphic form with slabs of colour as opposed to the more subtle original tones. These images have now been accepted by Fine Art America for a range of merchandise ranging from canvas prints to mobile phone covers. I hope you like the results.
