I've been juggling. Juggling with paintings and places. Twenty paintings and six prints have been scattered across the country (well only North East Wales and a bit of Cheshire actually!) with exhibitions at Gwernaffield, Gorsedd, Frodsham and Clwyd Theatr Cymru over a period of four days. Can't take a breather because my annual Winter Exhibition is about to start!

Alwyn Dempster Jones at his home/gallery in Mold.

Over 50 original paintings, the very latest limited edition prints, postcards and Christmas cards.

Hiraethog

Ty'n y Llyn (Pastel/Ink) 42cm x52cm
Ty'n y Llyn, No.2 (Pastel/Watercolour) 62cm x 50cm

Moors stretching along in almost interminable tracts with scarcely a tree to offer obstruction to the winds of heaven ...
Thomas Roscoe

Mynydd Hiraethog is wet underfoot, they get a lot of rain here, so why did I choose to wear fabric boots? I got it wrong. My day sketching produced two drawings (later developed into paintings) and two very wet feet. The concentration wanders when I'm wet. But Ty'n y Llyn is a lovely old farmhouse in a glorious setting but sadly falling apart. We had had a lot of very hot weather and on the map the path looked benign and I could visualise clear, bone dry, well defined tracks that would be easy to navigate. I know nothing!.

These paintings will be part of an exhibition of about 40 new pieces of work that will be on display in my home/gallery during three weekends (including Fridays) in September as part of the Helfa Gelf Open Studios event. Visitors are welcome to come along to view the work and talk to the artists. This event is FREE.

Distinct lack of fairies

Afon Gyrach (Pastel/Ink)  62cm x 50cm

The Afon Gyrach runs off the northern Carneddau and flows down to Capelulo where it is known as Fairy Glen, then carries on its journey to the sea via Dwygyfylchi. No fairies were seen or heard despite me sitting quietly for four hours. Perhaps, if we look very carefully one or two may be hiding somewhere in the painting . . .

This painting will be part of an exhibition of about 40 new pieces of work that will be on display during three weekends (including Fridays) in September as part of the Helfa Gelf Open Studios FREE event. Visitors are welcome to come along to view the work and talk to the artists.

Maen y Gaseg again

Maen y Gaseg (Pastel/Ink on board)  62cm x 48cm

Long hot summers of my childhood were spent wandering the hills above Brynrefail and Deiniolen. The heat, the smell of bracken, the stillness and the hum of insects. Narrow, wall-lined tracks with rusty gates and stiles leading to who knew where. Snowdonia is full of infrequently visited pockets of land where you never meet a soul, long abandoned farms and forgotten paths.

I have painted Maen y Gaseg and in the surrounding hills many times over the years. Things change over time, the lintel on the gable end of the outbuilding has now collapsed and the old gate has disappeared.

This painting will be part of an exhibition of about 40 new pieces of work that will be on display during three weekends (including Fridays) in September as part of the Helfa Gelf Open Studios event. Visitors are very welcome to come along to view the work and talk to the artists. Admission is FREE.

The Snowdon Horseshoe (Pastel/Watercolour)

Snowdon Horseshoe (Pastel/Watercolour on board)

Another painting produced from sketches gathered during the winter. The forecast the previous day was good so the alarm was set and I left our house at 6.00am. Using a bit of local knowledge gleaned over the years I knew where the shadows would be on the mountains by the time I had walked for an hour or so. Sitting on a wall gave me the extra height I needed.

This painting will be part of an exhibition of about 40 new pieces of work that will be on display during three weekends (including Fridays) in September as part of the Helfa Gelf Open Studios event which is free to all visitors who are welcome to come along to view the work and talk to the artists.

Open Studios (Helfa Gelf), 40 days and counting

Sheep in Winter (Pastel/Ink/Watercolour)

Now in its eighth year, this free annual event is spread right across North Wales with studios taking part in Gwynedd, Conwy, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham. It is a unique chance for visitors to peek behind the scenes, experience this normally hidden world and get to chat to the artists and crafts people about their creative process.
Every weekend this September, forge your own art trail around the area, calling in on painters, sculptors, photographers, jewellery makers, woodworkers, potters, textile workers, glass makers, basket weavers, printers, each one with a highly individual skill.
Seeing an artist in action, chatting over a cup tea amongst the paints, clay and saw-dust gives you a real insight into the artistic process. And with over 300 to choose from there’s definitely something for everyone.
Take this great opportunity to hunt down those undiscovered art treasures and see how they’re made – whether you are just curious about what artists and craftspeople do in their studios, or want to start your own collection of interesting artworks bought direct from the makers.

Starts Friday 6th September, 40 days and counting!

If you go down to the woods today . . .

Cool forest   (Pastel/Watercolour on board)

I can't stand the heat. I've been searching for shadows and I've discovered forests.

It's been difficult for me to work in these high temperatures and I do like to be comfortable when I'm working, but the forest was cool although the noise of buzzing flies was a bit of a distraction!

This painting will be on display along with other new pieces during the annual open studio event Helfa Gelf (Art Trail) during three weekends in September.

North Wales Open Art exhibition 2013

Clwyd Theatr Cymru, 22 June - 30 August
Two paintings entered and accepted this year. The painting below is of the area between Nercwys and Eryrys near Mold, North Wales and involved four visits over two days before the real work began. It is a picture about light and the slow migration from one season to the next. In March the sun is still quite low in the sky, producing long shadows. Clouds racing across the sky would still threaten sleet with ribbons of light dancing over a landscape waking up after a cold winter. The sun on the grass beyond the gate and the contrast with the shadows and the gate add interest to the forground. I particularly liked the detail of the thin shadow of the gate on the snow and the farmer's twine.

The Snowman

Moel Famau from Eryrys (Pastel on board)  34" x 14"

A lot of snow has been dumped on my paintings lately. Yesterday someone asked me if I specialise in snow. If it's Winter and it snows and I'm out painting then I do specialise in snow. Sketching becomes more frantic, the fingers are bluer and I am more aware of my toes than I am in the Summer months.Moel Famau from Eryrys started life as a series of quick pen and ink sketches and colour notes on layout paper which were then transferred onto board with a good dusting of snowflakes.

St. David's Day Exhibition

A track down to Mold  (Pastel on board)  50cm x 62cm

I have been invited by Paul Griffiths, the owner of PG Framing Ltd. to stage the company's first St. David's Day art exhibition.

Paul does all my framing, he is a commended member of the Guild of Fine Art Framers and has 25 years experience. He knows what he's doing and unfased by anything I've thrown at him. I've been busy in the snow lately so there will be a lot of new work on display and an opportunity to meet the artist, but I hope that will not put too many people off!
